How to Handle Pandemic Fatigue as a Family

When the COVID-19 pandemic first hit, many of us thought we would deal with a “lockdown” for a few weeks, and life would return to normal.

Looking back now, that idea seems laughable. Case numbers continue to spike across the country, and restrictions are still in place all over. Even though there is a light at the end of the tunnel thanks to the vaccine rollout, it’s likely that we won’t be experiencing normal for at least a little while longer.

That means drudging through the effects of the pandemic for a while longer.

We have been dealing with it for the better part of a year, and that can lead to feeling burnt out and fatigued, both individually and as a family.

So, what can you do about it until some sense of normalcy returns?

Develop a Routine

Routine is important, especially for children. While it might feel like one day is running into another, creating a “schedule” and routine can help both you and your children to feel a sense of stability.

That doesn’t mean doing everything the same each day. But, having the same sleep/wake times, meal times, etc., can make a big difference. Stability in times of uncertainty is important for everyone. It can help you feel more prepared, less burnt out, and it can help you handle conflicts with a more level head.

Find Some “Me” Time

Because everyone is spending more time at home, one reason you might feel fatigued is because you’re not taking care of yourself the way you should. Whether you have kids or you live with a spouse/partner, it’s still important to take time for yourself.

That might mean taking a walk around the neighborhood. It might mean finding a quiet place in your house to read for an hour. Do something every day that allows you to be alone and practice self-care. Doing so will help to refresh you and make it easier to value the time you get to spend with your family.

Switch Up Activities

When you have kids, it’s not uncommon to hear the words “I’m bored” regularly. That’s true, even when you’re not in the midst of a global pandemic. But, because activities are so limited right now, you might deal with boredom from your kids more than usual. Though you might not say it out loud, you could be just as bored, too!

So, don’t be afraid to switch up your activities and try something new. Go to the park one day and hiking the next. Have a board game day inside, or cook a meal together as a family.

Does it take a bit of creativity to come up with new ideas? Yes. But it can be worth it when you can come up with boredom busters for the whole family. Plus, it’s a great way to create new, lasting memories, even during such a strange time.
